While it may be cold, wet & called the ‘dead season’, that doesn’t mean you need the hibernate all winter! There are tons of fun activities to do outside that come & go with the snow! Here are 3 of our favourite outdoor winter activities that you can enjoy with your friends & families this winter!

Skating
Although you could ‘technically’ skate all year long, it’s just better in the winter! The snow may be cold, but it makes for a great view & there is nothing better than skating in the beauty of nature! Going skating is not only a fun activity to do, but it’s also a great workout! Ice skating helps improve your balance, increases your endurance levels & of course is a great leg & cardio workout! If you’re looking for some great outdoor ice rinks in Ontario, Ottawa & Toronto both have beautiful outdoor skating rinks that can be enjoyed by everyone!

Skiing
Whether it’s downhill or cross-country, there is no doubt in anyone’s minds that skiing is a great way to exercise & have fun at the same time! While skiing you’re constantly working to stay balanced, meaning your core is engaged at all times! This helps strengthen your core as well as improve your balance. It’s also a great workout for our legs & all lower body muscles. When skiing downhill, you’re typically in a squat position which works your thighs, hamstrings, glutes & quads! Cross-country skiing is also a great source of exercise. It allows you to enjoy time with friends or family & experience the beauty of winter all at the same time! Best of all, it can be done anywhere, no need to head to the ski-hill!

Snowboarding
Snowboarding may require a bit more talent than skiing, but once you get the hang of it you will love it! Snowboarding is a fast-paced,exciting way to get a workout in all while enjoying the great outdoors! Similar to skating & skiing, snowboarding is a great cardio & lower body workout! The one difference between these 3 winter sports, is that snowboarding can provide you with a total body workout! You’re able to tone virtually every muscle in your body while going down the hill! You use your legs & core to steer the board & maintain balance & you use your upper body to ensure overall balance of your board. This sport allows help improve your ability to focus! On a board, its especially important to pay close attention to any changes in terrain. This forces your brain to focus not only on maintaining balance, but also on the slope in front of you.

There are so many fun winter activities to enjoy, don’t let the cold weather keep you locked inside! Get out, have some fun & enjoy all the beauty that comes with the snow!
